Around 5:20, Tyler and I headed out to pick up some groceries. We went to Sam’s Club and Meijer and we were back by 7pm. That’s record breaking time for us!

We picked up a lot of stuff, especially at Sam’s. This trip to Sam’s will probably be our last in Michigan, because we won’t want to move food across the country! Our freezer is stuffed right now with bread and meats and a bunch of other things (like my Kashi waffles!). I’m hoping all this food will last us well into July, at least the stuff we bought in bulk.

Dinner was the Trader Ming’s Orange Glazed Chicken Stir Fry with Rice and Cashews that we picked up today at Trader Joe’s. Tyler and I both liked the dish. It was super easy to make, my only complaint was that it really didn’t make very much. I was pretty hungry for dinner, and I always give Tyler more food than me, but this was all I got. It was not very satisfying. I would probably add some extra veggies to bulk it up if I bought it again, but for $4 I’m not sure that I would buy it again. We’ll see.

After dinner I had a small bowl of strawberries (or rather a small amount in a big bowl) with a Kashi TLC Dark Chocolate Cookie. Tyler and I also finished off the last of the Runts from Friday night.

Well folks, that’s all! Maybe tomorrow’s meals will be slightly more eventful, now that I have so many things to cook with at home!

Oops sorry I forgot to give you some of my thoughts on this Freeganism business.

I firmly believe it is important not to waste food, because there are people around the world that go hungry every day. I think it is a great idea to avoid wasting other resources and to recycle anything that can be recycled, from shoes to pop cans. I would be in greater support of grocery stores donating bruised produced or meats that will soon reach their expiration date to food pantrys or shelters, than allowing individuals to retrieve these items. I realize however that there are laws that would need to regulate this sort of distribution of products, and that there could be negative implications associated with distributing this food. It may even just be too difficult to do.

Freegans don’t just forage in dumpster. I disagree with the freegan concepts of squatting (occupying a place illegally/trespassing), voluntary joblessness, and some practices that freegans may use to obtain free food including shoplifting, plate scraping, and employee scams. I think it better to contribute positively to a community by supporting the local economy, by working, by purchasing a home, and by buying local goods than to be voluntarily jobless in order to devote more time to volunteering.

I think that the general idea of being aware of one’s consumption is a positive idea, because it encourages recycling, composting, and wasting fewer resources. I however, will never be found scraping the extra food off of someone’s plate, or rummaging through a dumpster to find the foods the grocery store threw away.

Well those are my thoughts on freeganism, I apologize if they are somewhat disorganized or difficult to follow, it has been a long day, but I found this to be a very interesting topic that I wanted to see what people had to say about it!

Have a great night, and get pumped for Monday!

    Hi, nice blog :)

I really appreciate your perspective on Freeganism, it’s very interesting and I suppose I never put enough thought into it. Thanks!

Thanks for checking out my blog! I never put much thought into freeganism either, but when my fiance and I were watching TV yesterday there was a piece describing how these people live. I did a little more research on the topic on the internet, and found out a litte more about it.
I am not and will not ever be a freegan. I could never personally take my food out of a dumpster, or be voluntarily jobless. It seems that freegans have taken the concepts of awareness, recycling, and helping others to an extreme (whether that extreme is good or bad is up to the individual to judge).
Its always interesting to see how people live out the different ideals that they hold in their lives, and freeganism is definitely an interesting way to live one’s life!

I agree with you in that people should be more aware of their consumption. Freegans, though, won’t be getting any respect from me! That’s a little too extreme :)
