Some Hit or Miss Eats…

My plan was to go for a trail run this afternoon, but it was just too hot out. My car said 90 degrees! Yikes! Instead I ran a bunch of errands including the bank, Walgreens, Post Office, and Meijer (grocery store).

I got home and I was hungry so I got out the bar I had intended to have as a snack after my trail run, a Greens + Peanut Butter and Chocolate Bar. I took a few bites, and had to really decide whether or not I wanted to keep eating. This has a funky flavor that I definitely did not enjoy. I would not buy this bar…although the nutritionals are impressive. I ended up eating the whole bar, but was really unsatisfied, and thought the taste was just wrong. Sorry Greens +, but I think I’ll stick with my Luna and Clif bars!

A little later I ate a serving of Triscuits. Mmmm Salty!

Around 6:15 I needed another pick me up so I went for another serving of Triscuits but I added some protein with a Tbs. of almond butter.

When Tyler got home we headed out for a run together. We ran for about 33 minutes and ran 3.5 miles. It was still extremely hot out and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I think it was in part due to how humid it was. My legs also felt really tight and just stupid slow. I think when I run with Tyler I need to jog around a little before hand to warm my legs up. Its funny because I don’t have that problem when I don’t run with him. I’m not sure what the deal is. What I do know is that with how hot it is here (very hot for MI), I just can’t run anytime but the morning or when the sun has gone down. Oh well. We also walked around and jump roped and stretched after our run.

Tyler requested fish for dinner so I let some tilapia thaw in the refrig today. Around 6:30 I added some World Harbors Jerk Sauce for a marinade. We also needed to eat the last of the asparagus from the huge bunch we bought last week (probably let that sit a little too long oops!). I found this recipe for Roasted Asparagus with Balsamic Browned Butter  on the Cooking Light website and thought it sounded too good and too easy to pass up! Best of all I was able to cook the tilapia and the asparagus in the oven at the same time!

I showered while the tilapia and asparagus roasted, then quickly got dressed. I had a few minutes left so I browned the butter and added the soy sauce and balsamic vinegar to the sauce for the asparagus.

I had a 4 oz piece of jerk tilapia and about 8 spears of Roasted Asparagus with Balsamic Browned Butter.

The flavors of this asparagus recipe were awesome, but I’m totally not sold on this Sam’s Club asparagus. I washed it for about 10 minutes today, and the ends were still extremely gritty-”sand in your teeth” gritty! We even threw the extra away. I’m tempted to try this recipe with some broccoli (my fave green vegetable!), minus the roasting, I’d probably lightly steam it then drizzle the Browned Balsamic Butter sauce over the broccoli…hmmmm.

We were planning on going out for a friend of mine’s birthday for a drink, but its already almost 10:30 and I think we’re both pretty tired so we may just skip it. If we do go I’ll recap in the morning!

Sleep well!

I had the same exact thing happen to me with asparagus I bought from Sam’s Club in late June. I was puzzled and thought… there is somehow sand in this, what in the heck is going on here? I figured I didn’t rinse the spears well enough. I tried another 8 spears and I washed the heck out of them before I steamed them. Same result, gritty sand with each bite! This asparagus is from Dalton White Farms & Supplies out of Canada. I don’t think I will ever buy asparagus from Sam’s ever again!

Good to know I wasn’t the only one that had this problem with their asparagus! I was so confused because I had bought farmer’s market asparagus a week or two before an had no problems. I also thought I just hadn’t rinsed it well enough.
I’m with you, I won’t buy their asparagus again, if I have time I may email their complaint department about it, so that hopefully they can remedy the problem!
Thanks for sharing, now I know I don’t just suck at cooking asparagus!
