Holey Donuts has carved a niche for themselves in the food world by creating gourmet low fat donuts. Check out their story from Founder Frank Dilullo.

My parents are very health conscious and have tried a lot of the low fat and fat free foods that exist out there, so I decided to have them help in the review. So, we had Holey Donuts for breakfast this morning. We chose 4 varieties to sample and review (click the titles for the nutrition information):

We all tried some of each variety, but my mom and I let my dad have the majority of the cinnamon bun. Here’s my plate with 1/3 of the vanilla, chocolate, and caramel crumb donuts, and a piece of the cinnamon bun (I also had another 1/6th of the vanilla crumb and caramel crumb each).

We were all very impressed with the donuts and cinnamon bun in general.

The Jumbo Reduced Fat Cinnamon Bun was probably the heavy favorite. It was a lot larger than I expected, but still has very good nutrition information especially compared to a cinnamon roll you would get at the mall or at a bakery: 340 calories in the Holey Donuts Reduced Fat Cinnamon Bun; over 1000 calories in a Cinnamon Roll from a chain “bakery”. The inside of the cinnamon bun was soft and a little bit doughy with nice touches of cinnamon, and the icing was light and complemented the cinnamon bun very well! The icing on the bun was pretty sweet, but was mellowed out by the cinnamon flavors and spread out throughout the layers of the cinnamon bun, so that it was not overwhelming. My dad was very impressed and is considering ordered some for him and my mom to keep at home for special treats!

The donuts were also very good. They had a slightly more spongy texture than a regular donut, which was not at all unpleasant, just different. The icing and crumb toppings were not super heavy or excessive which I appreciated. The icings were very sweet, which for me makes the donuts better candidates for dessert than for breakfast.  The nutrition facts for these are all great as well, with each donut coming in just under 150 calories! If donuts are your thing, these definitely need to make their way into your freezer and then your tummy!

Stay tuned for more reviews in the next few weeks as I try the other varieties and get Tyler’s opinions on them as well!

Thanks again Holey Donuts, and congratulations on making a donut that tastes good but is guilt free!

Dreyer's Caramel and Pecan Praline Crunch Yogurt Blend, and a Petit Ecolier.

Ever since I saw  Jenna with these Petit Ecolier cookies on Eat, Live, Run, I’ve wanted to try them…Yesterday my mom and dad return from their trip through NorCal and my mom pulls a box of them out of her bag! She didn’t want to take them on the plane with her today and let me keep them! YUM! I’m so glad I got to try these!

I was a lazy bum today except a 25 minute strength workout that was a copycat of Thursday’s strength workout. I slacked off on weights during my half marathon training, so now I’m working on strength training 2-3 x per week, because I think it will have a really positive effect on my running. It  is just a matter of reassuring myself that I do have the time to take 25 minutes and do some strength moves.

I did catch up on Season 8 of The Biggest Loser on Hulu. I probably cried 10 different times! I know a lot of the premises of the show are skewed, but seeing these people making these life changing decisions and hopefully turning them into lifestyles just makes me so excited for them!

My parents also flew back to MI today, which was sad. I really enjoyed having them out here, and it made me a little MI homesick to have them leave. It’s a good thing Tyler will be out here in a few weeks!

Tomorrow should be a busy day. I’m aiming for a long run in the morning, then at 10:30 I’m registered for a free class at Whole Foods that I’ll tell you all about tomorrow! I’ve also got piles of homework as usual.

Hope you all had a wonderful Saturday!
